Café da Garagem

A Living Stage

Perched on the hillside of Lisbon’s Castelo district, Café da Garagem offers more than just food and drinks—it’s a theatrical journey through design. Originally a cold, undefined cafeteria within Teatro Taborda, the space was transformed in 2011 by Studio Astolfi into a warm, narrative-rich retreat with one of Lisbon’s most breathtaking city views.

The dramatic visual anchor is the expansive full-length mirror facing a wall of windows, reflecting and multiplying panoramas stretching from Graça to Martim Moniz and Mouraria, drawing the outside in as if folded into the space itself.
Studio Astolfi layered theatricality and comfort through bespoke interventions: casual tables made from recycled doors, mismatched vintage chairs, carpets softening the stone floor, and a suspended row of 32 handcrafted glass-bowl lamps that cast a warm, diffused glow over communal tables—amplified by reflections across the mirror at dusk.

Each corner is a detail waiting to be discovered: scripting quotes from plays, theatrical props repurposed as decoration, a piano for live music, a whimsical birdcage named ‘António & Maria’, a coat stand made from chairs and historical objects displayed in vintage cases. Even the bill is delivered inside a shoe—literally, “A Pedra no Sapato”—celebrating the playful, evocative spirit of the theatre.

The result is a cozy, domestic environment infused with dramatic narrative: a café inside a theatre, a living room with a view, a secret Lisbon hideaway that invites you to pause, gaze, reflect, and feel at home.
