Casa da Cultura da Comporta
From Rice Barn to Cultural Heartbeat
Located in the heart of Comporta, this cultural landmark was born from the thoughtful restoration of an old rice barn and former cinema, supported by PRODER community funding. Studio Astolfi’s interior design transforms the space into an atmospheric venue for exhibitions, artisanal markets, and cultural events.
Upon entering, visitors are transported into a narrative environment inspired by the Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira, where wooden walkways rhythmically guide guests through a series of boutique spaces and galleries. The design unites craft, nature, and architecture—reflecting the material textures, colours, and movement of local Alentejo culture.
Inside, the interior palette features whitewashed walls accented by blue trims, exposed wood beams, and a layout that embraces both permanence and flexibility. Small shops showcasing Portuguese fashion, ceramics, leather goods, and design objects line the walkway, creating a seamless blend between retail and exhibition .
Cultural programming regularly activates the cinema hall and gallery rooms—hosting art exhibitions, pop-up markets, music events, and more. These zones highlight the dialogue between historical austerity and contemporary vivacity .
Casa da Cultura da Comporta is more than just a venue—it’s a sensorial journey that engages with local heritage, spatial storytelling, and architectural adaptation. A place where design and tradition converge in a fluid, cultural living room.
