Summer – 2017

Symphony of Craft

Under the art direction of Joana Astolfi, the Hermès Summer 2017 vitrine in Lisbon was transformed into a visual symphony, where musical instruments took center stage as sculptural protagonists. Collaborating with master luthiers Thibaut Dumas, Filipe Pinto Soares, and Óscar Cardoso, Studio Astolfi composed a poetic dialogue between the timeless artistry of instrument-making and the refined world of Hermès craftsmanship.

Inside the vitrine, each handmade piece—guitars, harps, flutes—was meticulously positioned to highlight its elegant silhouette, joinery details, and the natural rhythm of light across wood grain. The Hermès objects—scarves, bags, ties, and belts—were seamlessly integrated into the scene, creating moments of surprise and intimacy: a belt transforming into a hypnotized snake charmed by a wooden flute, a harp strung with men’s ties, a guitar whose strings are shoelaces. A perfume bottle holds an iShell, as if listening to the sea; a vintage megaphone echoes with the color and softness of a silk scarf.

The installation balanced restraint with wonder. Warm wood tones, focused lighting, and a minimal yet theatrical staging turned each instrument into a living artwork. The overall effect was one of quiet lyricism—where fashion, music, and craftsmanship converged in a surreal yet harmonious setting.

Studio Astolfi’s creation was not just a display—it was a performance in stillness, a poetic space where the language of sound and the tactile beauty of Hermès meet in perfect rhythm.
