Workshop Portuguese Makers

From Soap to Signature: A Workshop with Joana Astolfi

This hands-on creative workshop, part of the Portuguese Makers project, is a collaboration between designer Joana Astolfi and Claus Porto. It invites participants to explore the intersection of traditional soap-making and contemporary design, focusing on two main moments: customizing handmade soaps and creating personalized packaging.

The workshop is rooted in materiality, memory, and storytelling. It blends craftsmanship and creativity, giving each participant the chance to experience the delicate yet bold visual language of Claus Porto while adding their personal artistic imprint. The result is a multisensory encounter—through scent, touch, and design—that celebrates the value of making something by hand, with care and intention.

In this hands-on workshop, participants first customized their own soap by carving linoleum stamps and imprinting unique designs onto soap slices. They then used cylindrical soap bars as rollers to print their motifs onto kraft paper or fabric, creating personalized packaging inspired by the visual style of Claus Porto.
