José Avillez turned to Studio Astolfi to bring history and soul to his bairro, a collection of traditional but innovative businesses including a taberna, a patio restaurant, and a mercearia all focused on the best of Portuguese cuisine. Studio Astolfi invoked the spirit of neighborhood by building an expansive installation of domestic façades, with windows peeking into the lives of Lisboetas. Antique photographs, keepsakes, and intimate treasures culled from Lisbon’s famous flea markets and vintage shops evoke moments from the stories of local families, with clever conceptual twists barely hidden here and there to keep the mood as bright as the space itself.
