Kiosk Astolfi
Kiosk Astolfi: A Miniature Universe of Portuguese Craft and Imagination
In a kind of “return to its roots”, this travelling kiosk emerges as an installation-piece: a small house with a pitched roof and steps that reveal objects carrying their own stories. From re-editions of products already familiar to the public to new creations born from exclusive collaborations, each piece can now be taken home — just in time for the festive season.
Bringing the Kiosk Astolfi to life are special partnerships with brands and artisans that form part of Studio Astolfi’s creative repertoire, including Viarco, whose pencils have been faithful companions to Joana Astolfi for many years; Passa ao Futuro; and deFio. Alongside these established relationships, new collaborations materialise in iconic pieces, such as the silver jewellery created by Alê Monteiro de Freitas.
True to Studio Astolfi’s signature approach, the kiosk stands out through the way it reveals itself: an essential project that incorporates shelves, niches, and staircases that double as display elements, with one central feature — the oculus. This small opening invites visitors to glimpse a different object every day, creating a playful gesture that has become a hallmark of Joana Astolfi’s work.
Among the classics, highlights include the iShells and the bags created in collaboration with Passa ao Futuro. The linen cards featuring embroidered quotations (sold with a wooden baguette frame and leather cord) also hold a special place, as do the decorative cushions, originally created for the Christmas tree at Ritz Four Seasons Hotel Lisbon, now available in curated sets.
Through new collaborations, Joana Astolfi further explores her relationship with objects that hold a meaningful presence in her daily life, such as Viarco pencils. Although simple and accessible, the pencil reveals itself as an essential creative tool in her practice. A visit to the Viarco factory strengthened this emotional connection and inspired the desire to develop this partnership through several stages over the coming year. For Kiosk Astolfi, this collaboration introduces the blue pencil featuring the iconic phrase Let’s make better mistakes tomorrow, with a rubber tip and golden cap, as well as the two-colour pencil (blue and red), created with a series of contrasting phrases.
Also featured is the already recognised Allow Endings necklace, created with pencil tips collected and preserved by Joana Astolfi. Designed by Alê Monteiro de Freitas, the piece transforms the pencil tip into silver and adds wings, symbolising the idea that “endings must fly”. Each necklace is presented in a glass jar from Marinha Grande with a cork lid.
Following a successful collaboration with Filipa Won, founder of deFio, which resulted in exclusive tapestries created for the rooms of Torel Quinta da Vacaria, four new Arraiolos embroidery tapestries now emerge. Dedicated to the four elements — air, earth, fire, and water — they are presented and sold in frames.
Completing this selection are postcards featuring handwritten Astolfi quotations, with a simple yet striking black-and-white design. Linen placemats and napkins, as well as embroidered cushion covers featuring quotations, will also find their place at Kiosk Astolfi.
