La Danse du Temps: A timeless dialogue between heritage and modernity
Located on the historic Rua D. João IV in Porto, this restored 19th-century mansion has been reimagined as a luxury hotel where architecture, heritage, and hospitality converge in an immersive celebration of time. Spanning approximately 5,000 m², the project embraces a distinct and theatrical identity, rooted in grandeur, romance, and the layered narratives of history.
Conceived around the concept of La Danse du Temps (The Dance of Time), the hotel invites guests on a journey through different eras. From the elegance and ornamentation of the Belle Époque to the refined simplicity of Modernism, multiple periods coexist as the palace unfolds across two distinct buildings: the restored historic mansion and a contemporary new volume.
Rather than preserving a single moment in time, the project celebrates the continuous evolution of architecture, art, and culture. The historic building embodies the spirit of the Belle Époque, while the new construction reflects the artistic movements that followed, taking Modernism as its foundation. Each space is conceived around the influence of a different artist, allowing each building—and each era—to express its own unique artistic narrative. Guests are therefore invited not only to experience the architecture, but also to embark on a curated journey through the history of art.
The interior design is defined by a rich and expressive palette, combined with a strong sense of theatricality. Vibrant tones are balanced with natural materials, while original architectural elements—including decorative mouldings, frescoes, and ornamental details—have been meticulously preserved and reinterpreted. These interventions ensure that the authenticity and character of the mansion remain at the heart of the guest experience.
The result is a destination that transcends traditional luxury hospitality. More than a hotel, it becomes a stage where past and present exist in dialogue—a place where memory, craftsmanship, and imagination converge to create a singular experience of beauty, discovery, and timeless elegance.
