ETIC Facade Installation
Creativity takes courage
For the ETIC – School of Innovation and Creation in Lisbon, the challenge was clear: transform a plain facade into a powerful visual and conceptual statement. The result? A bold, poetic installation by Joana Astolfi that redefines the building as more than just an architectural structure—it becomes a message, a canvas, and a source of inspiration.
The concept was elegantly simple yet deeply symbolic. Inspired by the ruled pages of a notebook, Astolfi recreated that familiar lined pattern using 8mm metal rods, painted in the iconic blue and red hues of traditional school notepads. These lines stretched across the building, turning its facade into a giant page—ready to be filled with ideas.
On the page, a manifesto for creativity is written, with each letter crafted from metal and carefully spaced from the wall to cast shadows—subtle by day, illuminated and dramatic by night. The effect is a message that literally comes alive with light, projecting its words outward for the whole city to see.
"Have a mission, plan ahead, question everything, assume nothing, roll up your sleeves, study the past, take risks, dream higher, welcome change, have an amazing haircut, laugh, be curious, pay attention to details, make mistakes, think sideways, do things with passion, don’t forget to play, take it to the edge, breathe.
Creativity takes courage."
More than a phrase is a call to action, a reminder to Lisbon’s students, artists, and passersby that bold expression begins with bravery.
Through this installation, the ETIC facade has been transformed into a storytelling medium—engaging, inspiring, and reflective of the school’s core mission. Joana Astolfi and her team at Studio Astolfi have created a work that not only beautifies the city but also uplifts it, inviting everyone to read between the lines and dream boldly.
