Portals to the Tropics
For Pau Brasil 109, Studio Astolfi reimagines an 18th-century Pombaline palacete in Príncipe Real as a celebration of Brazilian identity, culture, and design. Responding to the principles of the original Pau-Brasil movement—founded on modernism, primitivism, and Brazilian authenticity—the design immerses visitors in a narrative of immigration, colonial exchange, and creative renewal.
Our vision blends tropical motifs, artisanal craftsmanship, and layered scenography: think coffee‑stained mountain forms, hand‑sewn linen birds, and vibrant botanical accents that evoke Brazil’s lush landscapes and ancestral histories. We crafted windows and doorways as portals into imagined homes—evoking the sound of doorbells and the intimacy of lived stories—creating a 20‑meter-long installation that invites exploration.
Every material is intentional: wood echoing indigenous forms, textiles evoking domestic memory, and spatial compositions that balance exhibition logic with emotional resonance. Pau Brasil 109 is not just a retail space—it’s a sensory journey, a dialogue between past and present, and a living tribute to cultural hybridity through design
